The importance of personal protective equipment

Personal protective equipment neither reduces the concentration of hazardous substances in the workplace nor eliminates them, but is the last barrier to protect people from harm. As an auxiliary preventive measure, PPE cabinet malaysia can prevent or reduce the occurrence of industrial accidents, occupational diseases and occupational poisoning if used properly.

Why is respiratory protection equipment respiratory protection listed separately?

Statistically the majority of occupational poisonings are caused by the inhalation of toxic substances. The key to preventing pneumoconiosis, occupational poisoning and hypoxic asphyxia is to prevent the invasion of toxic substances from the respiratory organs. There are two types of respiratory protection commonly available: filtered and isolation type. Filtered respirators can only be used in environments with sufficient oxygen concentration and low concentrations of toxic contamination and cannot be used for protection in confined spaces such as tanks and vats. Filtered respirators are divided into dust respirators and anti-toxic respirators according to their resistance to harmful substances. The former is mainly used to prevent respiratory dust of particle size less than 5 microns from being inhaled through the respiratory tract, representative protection products include dust masks and dust masks; the latter is used to prevent the inhalation of toxic gases, vapours, toxic fumes and other hazards through the respiratory tract, usually known as gas masks and gas masks.

Protective clothing

Isolation respirators isolate the respiratory organs of the wearer from the contaminated environment. The respirator itself provides air or introduces air from a clean environment to maintain normal human breathing. It can be used in life-threatening workplaces where there is a lack of oxygen, heavy dust and toxic contamination and unknown conditions, regardless of the environmental conditions.

When selecting respiratory protective equipment, the nature of the hazardous chemical, the maximum possible concentration of the contaminant in the workplace, the oxygen content in the workplace, the profile of the user and the environmental conditions should be taken into account. For example, self-contained breathing apparatus are selected by choosing the type of respirator according to the toxic concentration in the workplace, the filter canister according to the properties of the toxic substance and the mask according to the shape of the user’s face and environmental conditions.

Other personal protective equipment

To prevent eye and skin damage from chemical splashes, chemical dusts, fumes, mists and vapours. It is also necessary to select the appropriate protective equipment for the specific situation, such as chemical protective clothing, impact-resistant glasses or dust-proof clothing. Eye protection products mainly include goggles and face shields for protection against corrosive liquids and vapours that can damage the face. Use protective gloves, aprons, boots and overalls made from impervious materials to avoid injuries caused by direct skin contact with chemicals. The materials used to make this protective equipment vary in function and it is important to choose correctly. For example, cotton and leather gloves are mainly used for dust protection and rubber gloves are antiseptic substances. For certain chemicals, skin care products such as skin creams and lotions can be used directly to protect the skin.
